Rich's Paving does asphalt paving in Sebastopol and across the rural west side of Sonoma County. We work out of Petaluma, about 20 minutes south of town on Highway 116. A long driveway is really a road. It carries weight in all weather, so we build it like one. We grade the route, set a rock base, then pave with hot mix asphalt. On soft or low ground we add depth to the base rather than more asphalt on top.
Many properties around Sebastopol keep part of the drive in gravel. We build and rebuild gravel driveways with the right rock and a crown that sheds water. Some owners pave the first stretch by the road plus the parking area, and leave the back run in gravel. That keeps mud off the house without paving the whole length.
Sebastopol sits about 8 miles west of Santa Rosa, on the edge of the Laguna de Santa Rosa. That low ground floods in winter, and water with nowhere to go softens the base under a driveway. We handle grading and drainage as part of the paving, with slope and catch basins where a site needs them. Fog and shade also keep pavement damp longer under oaks and orchard rows.
Older asphalt in west county tends to fail at the edges first, where water gets in. Cracks widen, then the edge crumbles under a truck tire. Asphalt repair and patching can hold a good drive for years when the base is still sound. Once the surface dries out and fades, asphalt sealcoating slows the next round of cracking.
