Rich's Paving has been handling asphalt driveway paving for homes in Petaluma and across Sonoma County since 1988. Richard Stanley is a third-generation paving contractor, and his son now works alongside him on the same crew. Driveway paving is the bread and butter of this business, and we keep a crew on driveways year round. We pave short city driveways in town and long private drives out through the orchard and vineyard country.
We own the paver, the roller, the dump trucks and the compaction equipment that show up on your driveway. Grading, base rock, paving and rolling all stay with our own crew, from the first morning to the last pass. That keeps the schedule tight and keeps the base built to the depth the soil on your lot calls for. On rural parcels where asphalt is not the plan, we also build gravel driveways over the same compacted base.

A new asphalt driveway is won or lost under the surface, long before any black asphalt goes down. We strip off the topsoil and any soft ground, then shape the subgrade so water runs toward the edges. Base rock goes down next and gets compacted in lifts with the roller until it stops moving underfoot. The asphalt only goes on once that base is tight and holds a clean, even grade the whole way.
Hot mix asphalt goes down with our paver and gets rolled while it is still hot enough to compact. Edges are shaped and compacted by hand, because the edge is where a driveway usually starts to break apart. We tie the new surface into the street, the garage apron and any existing concrete so nothing catches a tire. If you would rather have a hard surface other than asphalt, we also pour concrete driveways at homes here.
Petaluma and much of the North Bay sit on heavy adobe clay soil that never really holds still. That clay swells up when the winter rain soaks in, then shrinks back down through the long dry summer. The ground under a driveway moves with it, and thin asphalt over a thin base moves right along with it. Cracks show up first along the edges and in the low spots, then work their way into the middle.
The fix starts underneath, with base depth and drainage matched to the clay soil we find on your property. We grade the finished surface so that rain sheds off to the sides instead of pooling in the middle. Hot dry summers oxidize the binder and fade the asphalt gray, so asphalt sealcoating pays off a few years in. Coastal fog out in west county keeps some driveways damp for weeks, which makes good drainage matter even more.
Both are on the table here, and the condition of the base decides which one fits your driveway best. If the old asphalt is still sound and the grade drains the way it should, an overlay works well. We clean the surface, cut out and replace the failed spots with asphalt repair, then pave over the top. Resurfacing an old driveway gives you a fresh driving surface without tearing the whole thing out and starting over.
Full driveway replacement is the right call when the base underneath the old asphalt has already given out. Alligator cracking spread across wide areas, and ruts that stay soft for days after rain, both point that way.
