It has to grip tires on grade, shed water sideways, and hold its edges on a slope the state rates as landslide prone in places. We build these with a compacted base, a thicker asphalt section, and a cross slope that sends runoff to a safe edge. That is hillside driveway paving in Mill Valley the way it has to be done.
The wet months prove the drainage. We set grading and drainage as part of the paving, with swales, culverts, and catch basins where the slope calls for them. On cut banks we build retaining walls along Mill Valley driveways so the hill stays off the pavement. Shade is the quiet factor here: pavement under redwood canopy stays damp, so moss and soft edges show up faster than in open sun.
