Rich's Paving takes asphalt paving work in San Mateo, CA, the far end of our Peninsula range at about 60 miles from our Petaluma yard. Richard Stanley is a third generation paving contractor, his son works the same crew, and the family has paved since 1988. San Mateo's neighborhoods each carry their own era of pavement. Baywood and Aragon were laid out in the late 1920s and 1930s, and about four out of five homes still hold their original character, Spanish and Tudor revivals with driveways to match. The prewar blocks of Baywood, Aragon, and San Mateo Park have driveways that were narrow the day they were poured. We rebuild them in asphalt or pour concrete driveways in San Mateo that fit the period of the house, aprons and walks included. Hillsdale's ranch home drives are wider and simpler, and most are overdue: a driveway from the 1940s has outlived its design life twice over.
San Mateo gets about 19 inches of rain a year, gentler than the North Bay, but the flat east side still holds water. Shoreview sits low enough that the city raised a levee to pull hundreds of homes out of the mapped flood zone. On ground like that, grading and drainage decides whether a new driveway stays dry.
