Rich's Paving takes on asphalt paving in Sausalito, CA, the hillside town just inside the Golden Gate. From our Petaluma yard it is about 31 miles straight down Highway 101, no bridge crossing. Richard Stanley is a third generation paving contractor, paving since 1988, and his son works beside him. Sausalito packs two different paving problems into two square miles: steep hillside driveways above Bridgeway, and flat waterfront ground that was built by hand during the war.
The Hill and Old Town climb fast off the water, with Victorian era and early 1900s homes stacked up narrow lanes. Driveways there fight gravity and water at the same time. Sausalito gets about 23 inches of rain a year, and a soaked hillside is a moving hillside. In one February storm a saturated slope here took a house down and forced about 50 homes to evacuate. Pavement cannot stop a landslide, but grading, drainage, and solid walls keep everyday runoff from undermining the driveway you park on.

A Sausalito hillside driveway is a small engineering job. We grade it to shed water to the safe side, build the base in compacted lifts, and pave a section thick enough for the slope. Where the drive is cut into the bank, retaining walls hold the uphill side and keep the edge from crumbling away. Tight access is normal here, and we plan equipment and staging around narrow lanes before the first truck arrives.
Water gets managed on purpose. We set drainage for Sausalito driveways with the pavement: swales, catch basins, and culverts sized for winter storms. Older drives with root heave or broken edges often need repair work more than replacement. When the surface has simply grayed out in the sun off the water, sealcoating is the cheap year saver.
North Sausalito's flat ground is not natural. The Marinship shipyard went in fast in 1942, on roughly a million cubic yards of fill placed over tidal marsh, and it built 93 ships before the war ended. Today that district holds marine services, working docks, studios, and the lots that serve them. Pavement on old fill settles unevenly, so lots here crack in maps and hold water in dips. The fix is usually staged: rebuild the failed base where it has settled, patch and level, then overlay the lot so it drains to the basins again.
